- Don’t disclose details. Never reply to unsolicited emails or calls asking you to disclose any personal details. Your bank will never ask you to give out your password and pin number, either over the phone or in an email.

- Update your security software. Keep your antivirus and spyware software up to date. Keep your firewall switched on and look out for any signs that your computer might be infected. A telltale symptom is your security software failing to start up.

- Shop securely. Make sure you’re shopping on a secure site by checking that the web address starts with https. Also, look for a lock in the bottom right- hand corner and only use a trusted online payment method such as PayPal.

- Avoid spoofs. Type the address for a Website you want to visit into the address bar on your browser –never just click a link in an email. This will help you avoid spoof Websites that trick you into entering personal details, including your account and pin number.

- Bank online. Don’t be afraid to bank online. This way you can keep an eye on your account and detect any fraud early on.

- Beware of links. Don’t randomly click on links sent to you in emails. The links could refer you to site containing a harmful virus.
